Lean into the Wind…in South Dakota!

“Lean into the wind” could be considered the unofficial motto for the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Los Angeles, which two women born and raised in South Dakota now call home.

It’s a lovely phrase. What it means to those who have joined the order also is lovely.

“It’s been used in our community especially the last few years,” says Sister Gianna Heinemann, a Flandreau native. “It’s facing your fear, but it’s more than that. It’s like grabbing the Lord’s hand and just running into the wind. It’s that sense of going deep with the Lord and allowing him to lead you and to trust.”

That is why the Carmelite Sisters’ seventh CD was titled “Lean into the Wind,” as is one of the 16 original songs performed…
