The inspiration behind the song…
You should have seen the excitement among the Sisters when our Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI called the Year of Faith 2012-2013! Each of us felt this exhilarating invitation to dive deep into the truths of our faith, our knowledge of Christ, “Beauty, ever ancient, ever new,” and to bring others along on this journey.
We had the desire to follow in the footsteps of Benedict XVI in seeking that “hermeneutic of continuity” with the past, our 2,000-year history as the Church of Jesus Christ. One way we wanted to make this connection was to compose a new mass setting inspired by ancient Latin chants, using the words of the new translation of the Mass. You may recognize melodies in this Creed from Veni Creator Spiritus, Ecce Panis Angelorus, Alma Redemptoris Mater, and Veni Sancte Spiritus.
This Creed is lengthy, but after all, it is an entire summary of our faith! And it is important to sing your faith! Lex orandi, lex credendi (literally the law of prayer is the law of belief…as we pray, so we believe). This Creed setting is lovingly dedicated to our Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.
